Cameroon: North West : Bamgam-Shisong Bridge Completed

Lukong Pius Nyuylime

10 May 2004

Kumbo — The population of Bamgam, Shisong and other neighbouring quarters in Kumbo Central recently heaved a sigh of relief following the completion of construction work on the Bamgam-Shisong bridge. Suspended since 1989 due to donor fatigue and general demobilisation, the CFA 30 million-bridge finally saw the light of day thanks to the mobilisation skills and support of Hon. Joseph Banadzem. The completion of the bridge is a veritable demonstration of the positive result of communal spirit that has so far reigned in the population of the area. While thanking his former colleagues for their initial support in cash and kind, Hon. Banadzem, heralded the enthusiasm in the population who demonstrated their will to put an end to stagnation and bring back to life the almost forgotten bridge. To ensure the continuity of such a spirit, Hon. Banadzem chipped in bags of cement, iron and binding rods, trips of sand, and concrete.

Initially estimated at CFA 19 million before devaluation and CFA 25 million after devaluation, the bridge when completed is projected to cost CFA 30 million. The Bamgam-Shisong bridge is an important socio-economic development tool for the population of quarters such as Mbah, Bamgam, Mensai, Mbokam, Ndzem, all of which constitute serious bread baskets for Kumbo town. The bridge is therefore expected to facilitate the transportation of agricultural products, particularly food to town and on the other side, agric in-puts from town to the farms. The bridge will equally serve as a short cut to the Shisong hospital, one of the major health facilities in Kumbo.

Without very much claiming ownership of the project, Hon. Banadzem testified that he is barely ensuring that projects conceived long ago be realised. "Most projects that I am realising have been conceived long ago", he said. That notwithstanding, he announced an ambitious development programme which he sets out to realise including the electrification project for Kikaikom (K3) to be realised with funds from the Heavily Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) initiative, and the Mbokui primary school under construction by a Non Governmental Organisation where he plays the role of facilitator.
