Many Nigerians were positively shocked to learn that HIV prevalence rate
has slightly dropped in Nigeria. Prior to the release of the 2003 sentinel
survey, many thought the rate would be higher than the 5.8 percent for
2001.
This is because findings from previous surveys have shown that HIV
prevalence has been on a consistent increase from 1.8 percent in 1991, to
5.8 percent in 2001, hence, experts had predicted that the rate would be
higher.
