Owerri — IMO State government has warned all contracting firms handling its projects to honourably and timely execute such jobs or risk unpleasant consequences, as the administration will not entertain requests for contract variations.Governor Achike Udenwa warned contractors when he inspected some on-going government projects in Owerri municipal council area.At Area 'H' Housing Estate, the governor who was apparently dissatisfied with the pace of work, directed the contracting firm to ensure that the drainage and road network in the area were completed before the rainy season fully sets in".

While telling the site engineer of the firm that he was not happy with the pace of work, the governor also asked them to expedite action on the project. The story was a little different at the new secretariat complex, Owerri, where the governor expressed happiness with the level of work at the site.

While commending the contractors handling the Secretariat Complex for "doing a good job", the governor however regretted that the possibilty of civil servants packing over to the complex at the end of this month as he promised during the May Day celebrations this year, was no longer feasible.Udenwa directed the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport, as well as the Ministry of Land, Survey and Urban Planning, "to clear the surroundings, do the landscaping and other necessary things which will make the area habitable".

Continuing, the governor said that the entire members of the state executive council rose from a crucial meeting and decided to inspect some of the government projects in the municipality, to ensure that the contracting firms were not only working according to specification, but also in line with the time schedule. At the time of the visit to the housing estate, some of the buildings were wearing new looks, as painting and fitting works were progressing.
