Sierra Leone: A Gourd of 'Poyo' for Our Resident Minister, East

opinion

Freetown — You may have seen a Bill Cosby, a Dan Dogo or a 'Sara the great' displaying their antics on television but what I am sure you have never heard of is a Government Minister trying to denounce his job just to become a Vamboi but to the residents of Kenema town in the East, they were living testimonies to this occurrence.

While Freetown was busy trying to come to terms with Norman's bombshell at the Special Court in which he offloaded his lawyers and sought to defend himself, in Kenema, the formal launching of the 2004 National Housing and Population Census was turned into a comedy show without the presence the presence of the 'wan pot comedians' In journalism, it is often said that though it does not pay to be crazy it however sometimes helps. But alas! Somebody somewhere in the Kabbah administration has taken upon himself to proclaim lunacy on his person in order to carry out the task he has been asked to do.

I am not talking about H.E's Eastern Resident Minister East who has almost completed visiting all the Lebanese shops in Kenema for " small tin" nor am I referring to the Resident Minister East whose trademark is his now fashioned request for 'gallonage' from NGOs whenever invited to attend their programmes. Don't just take my word for this but just ask around Kenema how many times NGOs have gone out of their way to fuel the vehicle of the number 1 man in the township.

Yes, he has similar features with onetime rebel leader Foday Sankoh but he does not want to be reminded of it. When you compare his pint size, his snow-like goatee, his ranting and ravings, then you have a perfect Foday Saybana Sankoh. The only difference though is that while Sankoh became a rebel through and through, this man has always been a political 'kolonko' who strongly stood and defended the APC ideology but when the party was kicked out of power by the NPRC, he quickly galloped away and rushed on top of the palm tree (tokpoi) like a palm- wine taper.

Sahr Fillie-Faboi is his name and for merely informing the entire world that the Resident Minister who became a radio DJ was busy intimidating and harassing Independent Candidates and even embarrassing the President during the run up to the just concluded Local Government Elections, he took offence and has therefore decided to fight back with veiled and childlike accusations.

What he ever failed to realize that his attempt to discredit Concord Times and yours truly has only confirmed that Fillie - Faboi has got some problems and the only opportunity now left for him is to send in an application to Dan Mos of Wan Pot fame to become a comedian.

When Fillie-Faboi was recently invited to the formal launching of the 2004 National Population and Housing Census in Kenema, as usual, he wasted precious time by saluting the audience with diatribes on Concord Times and your truly and indeed, he concluded the programme with Concord Times. Needless to say the people were bored but what has our institution and its editor got to do with Population Census that he could spoil such an occasion just to nail us? Can somebody whisper this to his ears that if only he has asked for a rejoinder, he would have been given the opportunity but apart from hijacking government radio in Kenema, I am not sure our man in Kenema knows the inner workings of the media, especially one (a medium) that is not state owned.

But of course what do you expect from people who have outlived their usefulness but yet those we have in authority thrived on embracing mediocrity?

Hear him like a true comedian acts - " Concord Times Editor is the son of Foday Sankoh Concord Times is a junta paper . Don't mind Benk Sankoh and his yellow brand of journalism," and bla bla bla.

Truth is, if only he had consulted his head before he puts his mouth on the air to broadcast his tale full of sound and fury that signified nothing, he would have realized that he was only making a Vamboi or a Sara the great of himself.

But then, let us assume for one second that Foday Sankoh was truly my biological father, what is even wrong with that? Should we crucify a son or a daughter just because of the sins of his/ her father? Sankoh may be bad but what has his wickedness got to do with a true son who never aided and abetted the former rebel warlord in his barbaric enterprise?

Was Sankoh not the same man Fillie- Faboi had openly declared in Tongo to be a true patriot? Perhaps, he has eaten his thoughts with ' cassada leaf,' but I am challenging him to deny this and the evidence will be excavated.

Apart from describing Sankoh a patriot, was this not the same man who Fillie- Faboi's boss compensated and placed in charge of diamonds and other precious minerals and even given status equal to then Vice President Demby?

Perhaps, Fillie- Faboi might have forgotten but what we thrive to do here is to put corrective measures to whosoever is in position of trust and especially a minister, who because of his old ways would want to continue giving this government a bad name.

We have no sacred cows and Fillie-Faboi should not count himself lucky as being one nor do we thrive on malice or bootlicking.

Truth is, if the Resident Minister East does something good, trust me, we are going to make banner headlines with it and at the same time, if he reverts to his old tricks, we will definitely try to remind him that the days of thuggery and intimidation are gone. The problem though is that it is difficult to learn an old dog new tricks and of course, a fool at forty is definitely a fool until thy Kingdom come.

Imagine Fillie-Faboi openly mouthing recently that Independent candidates are, " agents of the APC," when their only crime was to challenge the SLPP in Kenema.

For Fillie-Faboi and his likes, Democracy or not, the show of intimidation must go on. Hell no! We are here to put a stop to that and if that qualifies me to be tagged as the son of a rebel gangster, so be it.

For Concord Times and yours truly, our ' brand of yellow journalism' will continue as long as the likes of Fillie-Faboi continue to throw what was left of this country's image to ' samba gutter.' He may call us names, he may describe us as rebels, if he cares, he could even call us prophets of doom and gloom but, " we shall not be moved" nor become undaunted with the comedy of a ' fulumunmu' If he wants, let him hear this or else, let him jump off the Sewa River.
