CANADA has given Zambia U$3 million for the period of three years towards the support of the education sector plan.
Education Minister, Andrew Mulenga, said the support would help increase the enrolment and improved learning achievement at all levels in the education system.
Mr Mulenga was speaking during the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), between Zambia, Canada and European Commission (EC) held in Lusaka yesterday.
Mr Mulenga said the MoU would assist improve skills, expand access to and retention in high schools, increase access to tertiary education especially for women, the poor and other vulnerable groups and quality-based university education.
"This is an important step to increasing skills for poverty reduction, employment creation, and sustainable economic growth through ensuring equitable access to quality education and training that incorporates HIV/AIDS interventions, "Mr Mulenga said.
He commended the Canadian Government and the EC for their continued support to the education sector through a pooled funding mechanism to support the sector.
He further said the ministry had 12 programmes identified under the five-year strategic plan covering basic and tertiary education.
The programmes include infrastructure development, teacher education, curriculum development and distance education.
Others are cross-cutting issues (HIV/AIDS, gender and equity), community, procurement, financial management, planning, and university education.
