Kampala — THE Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is to visit Uganda from July 4 - 5, 2004 to appraise himself with the agency's programmes in the country.
According to Omare Okurut, the secretary general of the national comission for UNESCO, Koichiro Matsuura is coming at the invitation of the Government.
UNESCO supports several programmes in Uganda but the biggest component is in education.
According to a brief from the ministry of education, the main focus of their support was educational reform with emphasis on Universal Primary Education (UPE) and the education of the girl child.
"In this connection, the main target has been striving to achieve the Education For All (EFA) goals," the Permanent Secretary, Francis Lubanga said in the brief.
Omare said the agency was also supporting projects related to HIV/AIDS in education and was instrumental in establishing the Nakaseke telecentre.
