Nairobi — Coast Development Authority (CDA) has backed titanium mining in Kwale District.

The managing director, Prof Juma Lugogo, said the project was an important investment for the country.

"I welcome the Tiomin Resources Inc of Canada in Kwale as the project will create jobs," said Lugogo.

He was speaking in Msambweni during the district's HIV/Aids and Drug Abuse day celebrated world-wide on Saturday.

He, at the same time asked the Government to allow Kenyans to buy shares in the mining company.

"Shares should be floated within the country and not overseas. Kenyans should have a stake in the company ," Lugogo said .

He urged residents to support the mining project, saying it could benefit them.

He was accompanied by Plan Kenya Programme Unit Manager Mr Jillo Kasse.

Meanwhile, Lugogo has challenged locals to seek medical attention in hospitals instead of turning to traditional healers.

Lugogo said herbalists lacked facilities to diagnose patients and instead relied on symptoms.

"Let us be focused and stop running to herbalists for treatment instead of seeking qualified medical doctors, he said.

Vingujini Educational Welfare Association (VEWA) chairman, Mr Halimu Shauri, said the association had succeeded in sensitising Kwale residents on health and environmental issues.
