Nairobi — Residents neighbouring the Lake Nakuru National Park yesterday protested against harassment by baboons.
The residents said hundreds of baboons from the park had become a nuisance, saying the animals often sneaked out of the park to harass them.
A resident, Mr Paul Kibe said the animals sneak into their houses and steal food in pots and leave the pots and pans in the park.
Speaking at Lake View Estate, he said an electric fence could not contain baboons since they climbed on the posts without touching the wire. He made an appeal to the Kenya Wildlife Service to contain the animals before the situation degenerates into a full-blown animal-human conflict.
"These animals are very cunning, they find their way into the house, take food whether cooked or not and stroll back into the park where nobody can enter for fear of being attacked," he said. The affected estates are Kwa Rhonda, Murogi, Lake View, Pangani, Mwariki Phase I and II and some parts of Njoro division.
The residents said the baboons have been destroying their iron sheet roofs, adding that they cannot send their children to the shops because the baboons snatch things from them.
They said their maize crop had been destroyed by the animals and appealed to the government to give them relief food.
