Kenya: Policies On Street Children Planned

9 July 2004

Nairobi — The government will soon draft a policy that would tackle the ever-increasing number of street children.

Newly appointed assistant minister for Home Affairs Noah arap Too said the ministry had set up a national steering committee on orphans and vulnerable children.

Too concurred with the member for Saku Abdi Sasura (Kanu) that the number of street children in Marsabit as in other urban centres of the country was on the increase.

He said poverty and the Aids scourge cause social dislocation leading to the many children being left without care.

Too said the Aids scourge has led to the death of both parents and therefore their movements to urban centres in search of basic needs.

Too said the ministry through the children's department is looking into the issue of staff rationalisation.

At the moment, he said, the ministry did not have enough officers to post to every district but in consultation with the DPM.

Too said they had identified the need to recruit more children officers and train them to acquire the necessary skills to handle the delicate task.
