Kenya: Drought Threatens Over 460 Giraffes

Nation Reporter

Nairobi — More than 460 giraffes and other wildlife in Bouralgi, Garissa District, are at the risk of dying due to the current drought in the region.

The secretary of Bouralgi Giraffe Sanctuary, Mr Mohamed Hassan Affey, the chairman, Mr Dubow Subuney Ali, and the organising secretary, Mr Mohamed Garad Ali, said the animals had been forced to move far away from the sanctuary in search of pasture and water, making them vulnerable to killing by hunters.

He said that prominent farmers had closed 53 of the 158 animals routes to water sources, a situation that has caused conflict between human settlements and wildlife, leading to unnecessary killing of game.

Mr. Affix called on the Ministry of Tourism to elevate the sanctuary to a tourist attrition as it has the necessary scenic beauty and that the security situation in the area had greatly improved.

He blamed the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for deserting their camp and abandoning over 50 self-contained houses built by the World Bank to house more than 100 families.
