Johannesburg — THE Internet Society of SA has called for nominations to its executive committee in a bid to revamp the worldwide organisation's local chapter .

The Internet Society is a voluntary group bringing together 150 organisations and 16000 members in more than 180 countries. It addresses issues such as infrastructure standards, bridging the digital divide and encouraging the use of the internet as an information resource.

The local chapter was formed in 1996 and is run from Johannesburg, but it is now moving its annual general meeting to Cape Town. That will see the Cape Town membership drive the chapter's developments and projects for the next year.

The proceedings of the meeting scheduled for September 7 will be webcast, and nominees for the committee will have an opportunity to present their qualifications before the voting.

The Independent Democrat s' telecommunications spokesman, Vincent Gore, will attend the event to speak about the practical effect of public participation in the development of new telecoms legislation.
