Nairobi — Lions and buffaloes have invaded a Kilifi village, terrorising people and destroying crops.
More than 8,000 famine-stricken villagers are now living in fear as the five lions and six buffaloes roam in search of food.
The animals strayed from the Tsavo East National Park into the village in Mitangani Location of Bamba Division two weeks ago, according to area councillor Christopher Menza Tongoi.
"The lions and buffaloes have destroyed hundreds of acres of cow peas, bananas and cassava, and farmers are pleading with the authorities to take action before the matter goes out of hand," he said.
The animals are said to have killed six goats and imposed a curfew in the village. Children going to school are in danger of being attacked.
Mr Tongoi said the provincial administration and the Kenya Wildlife Service had been alerted but nothing has been done.
"Unless the Government takes urgent measures, the animals will damage more crops and cause a serious food shortage," he said.
Mr Tongoi urged the KWS to erect an electric fence round the park to protect human beings.
Another councillor, Mr Ndigiria Karisa Nyiro, claimed that relief food meant for the villagers had not been fairly distributed and some had been sold by Government officials. Some of the proceeds were allegedly spent on a dais for a minister's entourage.
District commissioner Chelimo Cheboi promised to investigate.
