Lagos — Today, by 4:00pm Nigerian time, the draws for the 6th edition of the African Scrabble Championship will take place in the Tanzanian capital of Dar-Es-Salaam even as Nigeria's first batch touched down on Monday through Addis Ababa aboard Ethiopia Air.

Four players made the trip from Nigeria. They are the Grand Master Ayo Adekunle, former African champion Moshood Sanni, Sunday Oshodi, Dennis Ikekeregor along with the technical director of the federation, Larry Ojoko and Federation President, Engineer Toke Aka.

The team shall have two foreign-based players, former African Champion Femi Awowade and Sanmi Odelana coming in from England. They arrived yesterday evening. Chinedu Okwelogu and Ibukun Faloye will make the trip on their private arrangement to make-up the Nigerian team.

Meanwhile, a number of Kenyan players are out of the championship. They include Martin Mwaka, the current Kenya number eight, who had to pull out following his employer's refusal to release him for the competition.

Meanwhile, South Africa is presenting an all-white team in the championship with former Nigerian Grand Master Lanre Oyegunle, the only black to have made the team opting out to concentrate on his preparation for the World Scrabble Championship where he would represent his newly adopted country.
