Chairman of Nigeria Football Association, Ibrahim Galadima will leave Nigeria today for South Africa for the final of the African Women Championship. Nigeria will play Cameroun on Sunday. Galadima will be attempting to boost their morale which became low following NFA's inability to pay their match bonuses even after their semi-final match against Ethiopia.
Their 12-day allowance was paid but the players Wednesday night rejected the bonuses approved by the FA. $500 for victory and $250 for draw bonuses were planned by the FA. The players are asking for $1000 for the group matches and $1500 for the semi-final. They want a match bonus of $2000 for the final. The meeting of players and officials Wednesday night was deadlocked and the signals were not good for a team going into the final.
"NFA is very broke and have not received any support from the sports ministry for the AWC," a board member of the FA said. Observers are generally not happy at the shabby treatment the girls are getting.
Galadima, we gathered, will have some money to pay the players but it was not confirmed if the FA will meet the players' demands before the final. Meanwhile, journalists covering the championship have picked six Nigerians among the 16 best players of the tournament. They are Perpetua Nkwocha, Cynthia Uwak, Kikelomo Ajayi, Yinka Kudaisi, Effionm Ekpo and Vera Okolo.
