Gambia: Brikama Nawetan Update

Banjul — Three teams have already secured their semi final position in the ongoing Brikama nawettan tournament after beating their opponents in the quarter final matches played at the Box Bar mini-stadium.

The first team to secure their position in the semis was Black Pool FC after beating Shell Marketing 5 - 4 in a penalty shoot-out. The 2002 league champions played the first half with goal chances, but failed to register any. Opponents, Shell, made a good come back of the game in the second forty-five and also missed their three clear chances when strikers BJ and Tapha both missed goals in the controversial game that ended goalless after a full ninety-minute encounter. As the teams went for the kicks, the five kicks of the former champions were all secured, while Shell lost a kick resulting in a 5 - 4 victory for the former champions who, many has described in town for making a good start in the tournament.

On Tuesday September 21 New Town FC trashed long-time rivals Top Ten by 5 - 4 in a penalty shoot-out after a one-all draw in the game. New Town who equalized through a wonderful goal by teenager Yaffi Susu in the last five minutes of the game after a throw pass from Pa Madi Bojang.

New Town are the second to join Black Pool FC in the semis of the town's 2004 league tournament. many football lovers commended New Town for their effort to defeat Top Ten, a team that has been defeating them in the past tournaments.

New Town, despite loosing star player Ousainou Bojang, the young boys did all what is expected from them and that is to win and book their place in the semis. Team Manager Ebrima Jatta alias Jacky was quoted as saying that the boys are determined to win any team in Brikama base on their records since at junior level up to date.

On Wednesday September 22, Bere FC another former champion some years back also beat the newly promoted Amasa FC in a penalty shoot-out after a 1- 1 draw in the game. Amasa who lost a kick in the penalty shoot-out were described by many as the team of the year after qualifying from elimination rounds and booked their place in the quarters of both the league and knockout. The team supporters told The Independent that although we are eliminated, but the team has done a good start and our mistakes will be ratified and we will seriously make a good start next season.

Meanwhile, the last quarterfinal match between Royal FC and Super Jabou was put off by the Brikama Youth and Sport Association (BYSA) who decried the lack of security in the Box Bar mini-stadium as supporters of Orlando Magic FC vow to disrupt the game claiming that they are the team that qualified to play that quarterfinal.

It could be recalled that Royal FC filed an appeal against Orlando in the grouping stage which was rejected by Orlando FC.

Meanwhile, the first semi final will be played tomorrow between New Town and Black Pool.
