Gambia: Violence Hits Brikama Nawettan Again

1 October 2004

Banjul — Soccer fans in the Western Division town of Brikama would not forget the 2004 nawettan season as it is the most troubled soccer competition ever organised at the Box Bar mini-stadium.

As the standing problem between BYSA and Orlando FC is not yet solved, another team on Sunday, Amasa FC, were involved in a violent action against the referee, BYSA officials and Berewuleng team.

The sad occasion happened last Sunday after the knockout match between Amasa FC and Berewuleng FC. Amasa FC seriously beaten by some Amasa FC fans and when the Brikama sports committee members came to rescue the assistant referee, the angry supporters turned on the committee officials beating them seriously, breaking all plastic chairs in the stadium. Stones were thrown all over the stadium and soccer fans in the stadium ran for their life, bringing confusion in the stadium.

The angry Amasa FC fans finished their action by attacking Berewuleng players and supporters causing many casualties in that camp. The damages in the stadium were reported to be immense.
