Ethiopia/Niger: FIFA May Suspend Ethiopia From International Football

1 October 2004

The International Football Federation says it might suspend Ethiopia from play because of government interference in its football federation. Niger is also facing a similar threat.

The FIFA associations committee said it was concerned about an increase of government interference in the affairs of football associations. The committee said it would recommend to the FIFA Executive Committee meeting October 6th that Ethiopia, along with Niger, be suspended.

FIFA's rules say that national football federations should be independent of government interference.

In June, FIFA banned Kenya from international play because the government had taken over the football federation. The Kenyan government agreed to set up a special committee to run the federation. The committee agreed to draw up new rules in line with FIFA regulations and Kenyan law, and Kenya was restored to play.
