Liberia: Brumskine Prepares to Quit LUP

Monrovia — One of Liberia's several presidential aspirants, Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, is said to preparing to resign from the Liberian Unification Party in the wake of political maneuvering within the party's hierarchy to dampen his chances in next year's elections.

At a joint news conference Wednesday, the Senior Advisor to Cllr. Brumskine, Debbah Allen, and the National Chairman of the Friends of Brumskine Lamii Kpargoi, said their "Principal" is considering leaving the party.

They said Brumskine's local and international political advisors have asked him(Brumskine) to quit the Liberia Unification Party and that have advised that such request be given serious consideration.

Kpargoi disclosed that Brumskine is in the process of announcing to the public his decision as it relates to his relationship with LUP.

For his part, Allen told newsmen, "We are advising Cllr. Brumskine to consider leaving the party. At the appropriate time, he will decide when to leave."

It is not known which political party the legal luminary will join, but it is believed that he might contest for the presidency as an independent candidate or form a new political party.

The disclosure from Kpargoi and Cllr. Brumskine's Senior Advisor, Allen, comes in the wake of allegations linking the Friends Of Brumskine (FOB) to burglary at the offices LUP's former Chairman Isaac Mannah on the Camp Johnson Road.

Mr. Cletus Sieh, a former Secretary of LUP accused the Friends of Brumskine of breaking into their newly dedicated offices and made away with several valuable items, including US$3,500 and LD$15,000.

However, in their reaction to Sieh's claims, the FOB National Chairman describes the allegations as "irresponsible and reckless."

He stressed that the business of his institution is not violence and that they have no part to play in the political rancor in LUP.

"The breaking and entry of LUP National Headquarters on Randall Street by Isaac Mannah, Cletus Sieh and their cohorts and the alleged subsequent action of some apparently angry partisans at the Mannah's LUP Office have nothing to do with FOB. FOB is not a subsidiary of LUP and therefore cannot be a party to the LUP's in-fighting," Kpargoi said.

He admonished those who are bent on accusing FOB to concentrate on solving the myriad of problem that Liberians are presently faced with.

He indicated that FOB has been in the vanguard for advocating against social injustices within Liberia even during the heydays of Taylor's tyranny.

"To the peril of our lives, we stood against the misrule of Charles Taylor even when many people who now masquerade the political landscape were afraid to speak for fear of personal injury." the FOB boss said.
