Uganda's Top 100 Taxpayers

Kampala — Shell (U) has for the third year running remained Uganda's number one tax paying company. According to the latest figures that cover the financial year 2002/2003 available to Sunday Monitor, Shell leads the top 100 companies followed by MTN-Uganda and Uganda Breweries.

Total (U) and British American Tobacco Uganda (BATU), in that order complete the list of the best five tax paying companies.

According to the figures, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) collected Shs 85.7 billion from Shell, a slight improvement from Shs 85.4 billion collected in the previous year of 2001/2002.

MTN up from the seventh position in the previous year paid Shs 57.7 billion into the national coffers. Uganda Breweries paid Shs 53.1 billion compared to the previous year's Shs 54.1 billion.

Uganda's top 100 taxpayers

Among the top ten contributors to the state coffers, there are only two beer companies Uganda Breweries (which is number three from the top) and (Nile Breweries No.7); one telecommunications company (MTN (U) Limited) and one tobacco company (British American Tobacco See graphic).

MTN displaced Uganda Breweries to the third position, which they attained the previous year. With Shell and Total, there are six oil companies in the top ten. These include Caltex Oil (U) (Shs 43.8 billion), Gapco (U) (Shs 26.9 billion), Kobil (U) (Shs 25.5 billion) and Petro (U) (Shs 25.4 billion) in that order.

Nile Breweries Gave URA Shs 36.9 billion, while Century Bottling Company (Shs 24.3 billion), the makers of Coca Cola which was among the best 10 in the previous year dropped out and was replaced by Kobil, which was last years' number 12.

The top 100 companies, which include The Monitor Publications (No. 56), contributed 72 percent of Uganda's tax base.

These companies contributed Shs 840 billion of the Shs 1.147 trillion total URA collections from 20,000 top taxpaying companies.

The top 10 taxpayers contributed 40 percent to the national coffers in form of tax revenue, while the top 20 contributed 52 percent of the total URA collections.

While it is a remarkable government policy to transform Uganda into a manufacturing country, it is interesting that there is no manufacturing company amongst the top ten contributors (See list of top 100).

This phenomenon, and the gap between the top 10 companies, is a telling insight to the country's economic direction.

Given that the investment landscape is always shifting, changes on the list will always definitely occur.
