Kenya: CCK De-Registers 9 Internet Firms

Nairobi — The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) has de-registered nine Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

CCK Director-General Sammy Kirui said the de-registration of the nine ISPs which became effective from October 7, 2004 was done in accordance with the Kenya Communications Act No 2 of 1998.

Kirui made the announcement in the Kenya Gazette of October 15 this year that CCK de-registered Dac Net Communications Limited, Sutch International Limited and Talknet Kenya Limited upon their own request.

The other ISPs that were de-registered are Datastream Online Limited (formerly Dyepole Communications Limited), Simba Net Limited, Modern Business Communications Ltd, Direct Dot Com and Zak Net Limited.

Meanwhile, the ministry of Water Resources Management and Development has given Nairobi water suppliers 30 days to register with the Nairobi Water Services Board.

Water Resources minister, Martha Karua, said water suppliers in Nairobi and its environs must register with the board and cited that City Hall is not allowed to grant licenses.

The minister made the announcement in a Kenya Gazette notice of October 15, 2004 that City Hall ceased to be a water undertaker and is not empowered to license suppliers.

This ruling follows the establishment of Nairobi Water Services Board, which takes over the function.

Karua said that in pursuant to provisions of the Water Act of 2002 that all water undertakers in the city and its environs including vendors licensed by City Hall must now be registered with Nairobi Water Services Board.

She said water undertakers appointed under the repealed Water Act Cap 372 and people permitted to drill boreholes for own use and supply to others as well as anybody operating any other arrangement for provision and supply of the commodity have to register.
