Pretoria — The South African Air force (SAAF) today honoured 63 members for distinguished performance of their duties and exceptional conduct.
These members are also former members of liberation movements in South Africa and were honoured for bravery, conspicuous conduct and exceptional combat leadership.
A total of 163 members had been identified for honour but only 63 could make it to the ceremony in Pretoria. Those who were unable to attend included members currently serving in various peace keeping missions abroad.
The honours had 14 categories. The categories included the Air Force Cross (CA), awarded to members who distinguished themselves in dangerous or critical situations and the Merit Medal in Silver that is awarded to those who served with exceptional and meticulous service and devotion to duty.
There was also the Military Merit Medal, awarded to members with exceptional service or "service of high order".
Chief of the South African Air Force Lieutenant General Roelofse Beukes said during the function that the awards were a way of encouraging members to strive for great performance.
"We need members who are committed in bringing peace and stability in our country," he said, adding: "We will continue to ensure that our members are disciplined and well trained to assist in peace initiatives in the African continent."
"We are proud of all members who demonstrate excellence in everything they do."
