Mafikeng — The North West Government will launch Disability Month here today in an effort to create awareness on the rights and privileges of people with disabilities.
Education MEC Johannes Tselapedi will officially launch the month under the theme "Ten Years of Freedom: Creating a Society for All."
"The decision to launch at [North West] university is informed by the fact that the Office on the Status of Disabled Persons in the Premier's office is mobilizing for a conducive and barrier free environment to cater for the needs of disabled students in institutions of higher learning.
"In this regard, the North West University, Mafikeng campus is playing a leading role," said Mr Monama.
The launch will be followed by a number of activities such as the launch of Disability Artistic Drama here at the Mmabana Arts Foundation and the International Day for the Disabled Persons on December 3.
Mr Monama said these activities would help sensitise people about the international norms and standards that guided the process of improving the quality of the lives of disabled persons.
"Such standards should assist nations in facilitating the participation of persons with disabilities in the social, economic and political spheres," he said.
Minister in the Presidency Essop Pahad launched the national Disability Awareness Month this week in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
