Lagos — The President of the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF), Arch Theophilus Caiafas, has commended the good gesture of Ashtonwells for the sponsorship of the Chess Invitational tournament featuring the 10 best players in the country.

The competition will hold at the Abraka Turf Club, Oria, Abraka, Delta State from 26th-28th of this month, the Chess boss believes, is another milestone in the history of chess development in the country.

Arch Caiafas said that the sponsorship of the tournament would no doubt change the orientation of players by making them put in their best at all times to improve their ratting in order to graduate into this prestigious invitational tournament in subsequent years to come.

The chess boss said further that the competition would enable most players to improve their ratings because the result would be sent to FIDE for ratification so that more players can bag international titles.

According to him: "Ashtonwells Invitational tournament is a unique innovation in Nigeria's chess history. I am particularly delighted with the enthusiasm shown by the players who are participating and they all know that the only way they can be part of the event next year is to aspire to do well in our tournaments as the only yard stick to retain the top 10 ranking.

"Chess players are noted to give away points when ever they are no longer in contention to win any prize at tournament which is against the ethics of the game and NCF have tried to see how to guide against it to some extent but with this Abraka fiesta, their orientation will change," he commented.
