Liberia:Continue Advocacy for Electricity

17 December 2004

editorial

Monrovia — FOR SOMETIME NOW, a civil advocacy group known as the Movement of Ideas for Change (MIC), has been engaged in massive awareness campaign for the restoration of electricity to Monrovia and its environs.

Besides, it has been involved in public information-sharing to achieve this all important national goal for the good of society.

THE MOVEMENT COMPRISES mostly media personnel who have embarked on the two-month advocacy campaign for the restoration of electricity to the estimated one million inhabitants of Monrovia which has been in darkness since the onset of the Liberian civil war in 1990.

ACCORDING TO MIC, the campaign is intended to make the government and the international community to see the need to restore electricity in Monrovia,.which is believed to be the only city that has been in darkness for a perennial period.

AMONG MANY ACTIVITIES and initiatives, the group has employed all communication skills through talk shows, information-sharing through organized street-corner discussions with citizens on the subject matter.

In addition, the Movement has vowed to constructively engage in the government towards this national goal.

IN ALL FAIRNESS, we wholeheartedly welcome this awareness campaign by MIC and at the same time hail those who are supporting this national initiative, because the restoration of electricity has enormous benefits to the country, especially as they relate to national security and economic development.

FOR US, THIS initiative is necessary because for the past few years, national leaders have paid lip-service to the restoration of electricity. We recall how during the Charles Taylor regime, a billboards depicting the full restoration of electricity erected around the capital, but disappointingly, this was only for showery and not with real intent to bring light to the city and its environs.

NOW, THIS TRANSITIONAL government has promised to provide street lights before the Christmas. We hope this will not be the ugly experience of the past when similar promises were made without result. Let the Bryant Government match its promise with concrete action WHILE WELCOMING THE initiative of MIC, we call on the group to remain focused and continue to have a sense of direction and purpose. Let the restoration of electricity remain the main focus of this movement. We urge them to guard against intra-wrangling over petite matters, because that is one of those little things that have contributed to the disintegration of many organizations.

ONCE AGAIN, WE urge MIC to continue the good work and ensure transparency and accountability to conciliate the donor community for this great national initiative. MIC, REMAIN FOCUSED.
