Zambia: DEC Seizes Cannabis in Sesheke District

THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Mongu has seized over 17.4 tonnes of cannabis from different fields and individuals in Sesheke district.

And 10 people have been arrested in connection with the seized drugs.

DEC public relations officer Betty Mumba in a statement yesterday named those arrested as Maxwell Kalunga, 66, a peasant farmer, Reuben Tembo 22, Mubiyana Sakubita 26 and Godfrey Mundia.

She said Kalunga of Chief Imbwae was arrested for cultivating 16.9 tonnes of cannabis at his farm.

Others arrested were Sepiso Mwinke 40, who was jointly charged with an Angolan farmer Petro Naize Morosante for cultivating 270 kilogramme of cannabis and Mabezi Malama 23, for cultivating 123 kiligramme.

She said two juveniles were also arrested during the operation.

In Lusaka, Ms Mumba said DEC had arrested Gift Musampha, a Malawian of Muchinga for trafficking 29.765 Kg of mira concealed in two travelling bags.

In Nakonde, the DEC arrested and jointly charged Felix Siwale and Shuku Sikalalangwe for trafficking in four bundles of mira wrapped in banana leaves and covered in newspapers.

Ms Mumba said the anti-money laundering investigations unit in Lusaka had arrested Mukanda Nyakambumba of plot number 11819 of Mosque road in Makeni for money laundering amounting to over K42 million.

Meanwhile, the DEC has also arrested a Zambian woman Msozi Tembo who had a forged passport when she arrived at the Lusaka International Airport from Pakistan.

She said it was discovered that the forged passport was bearing the names of Judith Tebe and has since been handed over to the immigration department.

Ms Mumba said Tembo, 34, of house number 202/1, Kaunda square was serving a one year sentence in Karachi, Pakistan for trafficking in Narcotics.
