Uganda: Mukwano's Plastic Chairs

Kampala — AK Plastics Uganda Ltd has started manufacturing plastic chairs in addition to the range of their domestic and commercial plastic products.

AK Plastics is member of the Mukwano Group of Companies.

Mr Akhilesh Jog, the Mukwano Managing Director, said the company has injected over $1.5 million in the venture.

"Through 2004, AK Plastics has embarked on an ambitious expansion plans by adopting sophisticated plastics technology with emphasis on plastic," Jog told reporters on Wednesday at the firm's offices on Mukwano Road.

The company manufactures plastic basins, cups, drums, food containers, and plates among other products.

Jog said Mukwano's initiative would cause a price reduction on plastic products on the local.

The manufacturing operation started last week with a production ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 chairs per day.

Uganda imports some of its plastic chairs from China, Japan, India, and Bangladesh among other countries.

Jog said they have identified markets in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Rwanda and Western Kenya.
