THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) seized 108 tonnes of cannabis last year compared to 182 tonnes in 2003.
The commission, however, notes that there has been a decline in drug trafficking, cultivating and abuse of illicit drugs in Zambia during the period under review.
DEC spokesperson Betty Mumba said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that the commission arrested 3,183 people for drug related offences in Zambia last year.
Ms Mumba said out of the 3,183 arrested 3,018 were Zambians and 165 were foreign nationals from 30 countries.
She said Tanzania had the highest number of foreign nationals arrested in Zambia with 28, followed by Somalia,26 and DR Congo, 24, Malawi,10 and Zimbabwe with eight cases.
Other countries were Angola six, Kenya five, USA, UK, Uganda and South Africa four each while India, Italy and Mali had three each. Australia, New Zealand and Rwanda had two each.
Nigeria, Norway, Burundi, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Philippines, Ireland, Lebanon, Liberia and Namibia recorded a case each.
Ms Mumba said out of the total number of persons arrested 2,725 were men with 458 women.
She said Western Province had the highest seizure of drugs with 41 tonnes followed by Southern Province with 22 tonnes.
