Nigeria: VWR, Katchey to Improve Nigerian Laboratory Supplies

Lagos — Considering the importance of laboratory equipment, reagents and other laboratory supplies to research and development as well as science and technology, world market leaders in laboratory supplies VWR International and Katchey, have stated their resolve to improve and invigorate the sector in the country.

VWR international, a United Kingdom UK Based Labouratory equipment manufacturer and supplier in collaboration with Nigerian based Katchey Company Limited have stated that their collaboration is not directed only at ensuring that their products are available in the Nigerian Market but also to create awareness and build capacity of professionals in the country thereby putting them at par with their counterparts in developed countries.

The Regional Manager, Global Operations Group European Division Mr. Simon Stell who spoke on the partnership between VWR International and Katchey said that the partnership will be a viable one aimed at improving Laboratory supplies in Nigeria and ensuring that only the best quality is maintained.

Katchey, which enjoys a lot of cooperation with the National Agency for Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) embarks on capacity building initiatives such as workshops, seminars and other training programmes for stakeholders in the labouratory supplies business including staff of NAFDAC.

Also speaking on the VWR international and Katchey partnership, Mrs Kate Isa the Chief Executive officer/CEO of Katchey emphasized that they were embarking on the sponsoship of Labouratory Managers of NAFDAC to a conference in bermingham United Kingdom and also planning to establish a labouratory materials manufacturing company in Nigeria.

Isa said that the were also taking some of their capacity building workshops and technical seminars to Jos and Portharcourt.

Confirming the high standard of Katchey products the DG NAFDAC, said "I make bold to say that by NAFDAC's experience with Katchey's service, her watchword is excellence."

Dr. Dora Akunyili further stated that "We are proud to say that the uninterrupted supply of high quality chemicals, consumable, etc at good discount with other value added services like staff training (both local and abroad), technical support which includes providing the latest information on products techniques. etc; Katchey and VWR had greatly enhanced our operations in NAFDAC. The success story of NAFDAC is therefore tied with that of Katchey."

For Katchey to have achieved this great height, extensive network of affiliation around the world was necessary. It is therefore important to stress that Katchey is the exclusive agents for VWR International Limited in Nigeria. VWR the global giant which offers a combined product range of over 400,000 line items is the result of mergers and acquisitions of leading global providers of laboratory supplies. Such as BDH Laboratory supplies (UK) Merck Gmbh (Germany), VWR scientific product (USA) sergeant Welch (USA), Prolabo (France) CN Bioscienge USA and several others.

Apart from VWR International Ltd, Katchey also exclusively represents LEEISA INC, the Los Angeles, California based corporation. This alliance is said to enable Katchey offer products from Shimadzu Scientific Instruments Inc, Bechman Coulter, Bio Red laboratories, Applied Biosciences, Cole Palmer, Sigma-Aldrich, La Mote and several other US manufacturers.

According to Mrs. Isa Katchey aims at been a truly one-stop-source for all products and service needed to effectively operate all types and sizes of laboratories in Nigeria. To show the company's desire to truly grow scientific development at the grass root, the company gave laboratory equipment and chemicals to two educational institutions: Grange Education Limited, GRA, Ikeja and African International School, Abuja.

On the home front Katchey is working hard to ensure that Nigeria made scientific products excel in the market. Currently they are marketing Science equipment manufactured by Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) base in Enugu. The result are good testimonies from the school principals to which supplies were made, testifying to the efficacy of such equipment claiming that they were the best qualies they've got recently.

Kartchey's driven to push the Nigerian science brand forward does not end there. According to Mrs. Isa the company is currently working with SHEDA Science & Technology Complex (SHESTCO) to market the products of SHESTCO's research efforts. An effort many well meaning Nigerians argue must be given prominence so that Nigerian researchers would be able to enjoy their research as is obtained in developed country.

The 15th anniversary celebration ceremony, which was witnessed by Simon Stell, VWR's export regional manager, global operations group is seen in some quarters as the beginning a solid private sector lead scientific development foundation in for Nigeria.
