Angola: Cuba: Ruling Party for Strengthening of Relations

Havana — Angola's ruling MPLA party secretary general, Julião Mateus Paulo "Dino Matross", Thursday in Havana spoke of the need for the strengthening of the existing relations of friendship and cooperation with Cuba.

At the head of an MPLA delegation on a visit to that Latin America country in response to an invitation from the Cuban Communist Party, Dino Matross considered as historic the relations between the two parties backdated to Angola's national liberation struggle.

On the occasion, he highlighted the ties link the Angolan and Cuban people, stressing that the presence of his party delegation in Cuba shows clearly the level reached in the relations between the two parties.

He also considered as a great work of solidarity the help Cuba extended to the defence of the consolidation of the Angolan people's major achievement: The national Independence.

Dino Matross recalled that the visit is taking place in year Angolans will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their independence whose significance is relevant not only for the people of Angola but for all those that love freedom.

The MPLA paid a homage to the combatants that built brilliant pages of heroism in the history of Angola, laying a wreath of flowers by the internationalists pantheon. 2.016 Cuban soldiers lost their lives in Angola.

In the African Magnate, Dino Matross and his delegation laid a wreath of flowers by the bust of the first and late president of Angola, Antonio Agostinho Neto, and attended a ceremony of homage to Amílcar Cabral, marking the 32nd anniversary of his death.

On the occasion, MPLA secretary general considered Cabral as an indisputably African leader, whose thinking highlighted ideals of freedom, independence, peace and social justice.

During its five-day stay in Cuba, the delegation will accomplish a large programme that will includes working sessions with the member of the PCC politburo, Estevan Lazo Hernandez, and official talks aimed at an assessment of the state of relations between the two parties.

The delegation will also be received in audience by the local foreign minister, Felipe Perez Roque, and the participation at the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, where diplomas will be handed to families of five Cubans held in the USA, two of whom had been on mission in Angola.

Angola and Cuba set up formal diplomatic relations on 29 July 1976.

In the MPLA delegation are the secretaries for International Relations and Economic and Social Policy, Paulo Teixeira Jorge and Manuel Nunes Júnio, respectively.
