Zimbabwe: Econet in $2 Billion PSL Sponsorship Deal

28 January 2005

Harare — ZIMBABWE'S leading cellular phone company, Econet Wireless, have been confirmed as the new sponsors of the Premier Soccer League in Zimbabwe. Although details of the sponsorship deal are still sketchy, The Daily News Online understands that Econet has agreed to inject more than $2 billion into the league.

The deal marks the end of the long marriage between Castle Lager and the top flight league in the country. PSL secretary-general Chris Sambo confirmed the deal.

"It's sealed and what we are only left with is the official launch which is scheduled for next week. What I can tell you at the moment is that the deal is good and is expected to change the face of football in the country," said Sambo.

The winners of the league championship are expected to pocket at least $600 millon while the Soccer Star of the Year is expected to get over $200 million, according to sources at Econet.
