Nigeria: Yabilsu, Ex-NRA President is Dead

9 February 2005

Lagos — FORMER president of Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), Col. Dogo Yabilsu is dead. He died yesterday at the National Hospital Abuja.

Yabilsu who hailed from Diddid, Plateau State, had Monday night been rushed to the hospital following a ghastly motor accident in which his car somersaulted severally.

The army colonel who had been undergoing a brigadier-general promotion course at the National War College, Abuja, was said to be returning from school when the accident occurred.

Doctors, we gathered, battled to save his life between Monday night when he was rushed to the hospital by a good Samaritan and 9:45 a.m. yesterday when he gave up the ghost.

Burial arrangements will be announced today, even as the Army, NRA and the family have been meeting on the issue.

Yabilsu is survived by his wife Kulu, who is the zonal coordinator of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Maiduguri, two boys and five girls.

In a swift reaction, incumbent president of NRA, Dr. Sam Jaja, described the death of Yabilsu as a rude shock and a huge loss to the nation.

He regretted that the cold hand of death chose to snatch him at a time when his services were still of great importance to the nation both within the army and the sports industry.
