Windhoek — THE Namibian branch of the Media Institute of Southern Africa has expressed sorrow and grief at the tragic death of Radio Energy's Benny Kamati.

Kamati, better known as BK to his listeners, is believed to have committed suicide in Windhoek on Wednesday.

He started out at the Katutura Community Radio station in 1995 at the tender age of 14 before he moved to Radio Energy and later NBC National Radio.

He rejoined Radio Energy in 2003 after doing a broadcasting course in the United Kingdom.

"He was always a bundle of enthusiasm at the station, coming up with new ideas for programmes, and always putting everything he possessed into his work.

He was one of Namibia's greatest nascent radio talents, with a unique and striking voice that could be used to charm late-night listeners, deliver news or simply be a friend to his devoted radio audience," said Robin Tyson, Chairman of Misa Namibia.

Gerald Johr, General Manager of Radio Energy, described him as someone with "above average voice control and articulation abilities. Benny Kamati Shikongo will be remembered for his passion for the microphone. He was an outstanding presenter," Johr said.

Funeral plans have not yet been announced.
