Addis Ababa — The Addis Ababa City Road Authority (AACRA) announced that it has almost finished the constructions of the two long awaited roads - Tele Medhanealem - ST. Ourael road and Adwa ring road square - Adwa Bridge road. The Addis Ababa City Government (AACG) has spent 53 million birr for the construction of these roads.
The first road which extends from St. Ourael to Bole Medhanealem is 2000 meters long and 30 meters wide. 90 percent of the 965 meters road (from St. Ourael to Atlas Hotel) is being completed by China Roads and Bridge Construction (CRBC).
The road from Atlas Hotel to Bole Medhanealem being constructed by AACRA was started on December 30, 2004, and so far, 70 percent of the construction including the bridge has been completed.
St. Ourael - Bole Medhanealem will consume 33 million birr of which the five million is to be paid for the residents near the road whose houses and fence were moved.
The construction work of the Adwa Ring Road square up to the Adwa Bridge (2,400 meters long and 25 meters wide) begun in January, 2005. So far, 60 percent of the work has been completed and is expected to consume 20 million birr. This road includes the construction of two bridges. Three million of the 20 million birr will be paid in compensation to residents who are affected by the construction work.
The construction work was delayed a few times as the roads have been hit by drainage leaking from houses and telephone cable fibres planted by the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC), according to the General Manager of AACRA Fekadu Haile
"The roads will be finished in two weeks time. However in the process we had to face sewerage problems which were leaking from houses to the road. Also, Telecommunication cable fibres which connected about four sub cities were in the middle of the road and we had to move that to the side too. With the integrated effort of all concerned bodies, the problems are now being solved," Fekadu added.
