Court — Mengo Chief Magistrate's Court on Thursday ordered Bank of Uganda to file its defence within 15 days over worker's compensation worth Sh18.8 million.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Anguandia Opifeni, issued the summons.

Ms Benedicta Nanyonga, through Ms Omunyokol & Co. Advocates, sued Bank of Uganda claiming Sh18, 858,000 being compensation to ailments she suffered during the time the bank employed her.

Nanyonga claims the bank employed her as a Note Examiner on November 1, 1977 to April 14, 2001 and during the time of her employment her duties were to examine, count and tie old money notes into bundles.

She contends that by the time of her retirement, the Kampala District Labour Office had computed her compensation amounting to Sh18, 858,000.

She claims the nature of her work was repetitive and over the years she developed neck pain associated with numbness and paraesthesia of the upper limbs.

"Due to the occupational repetitive strain injury the plaintiff developed severe Neck Shoulder Syndrome (NSS) affecting her right limb," the doctor's report filed in court contends.

The report says the plaintiff will never be able to carry out even simple household chores or any income generating activities involving the use of her upper limb. Nanyonga wants the money with an interest of 25 percent from August 2002.
