Uganda: Traumatised Kids to Get School

Kampala — UGANDA and Belgium are building a special boarding primary school to cater for traumatised children in war-torn northern Uganda.

Outlining policies to streamline education in Uganda at the Government press briefing on Thursday, education minister, Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire said there was need for a school to cater for children who have been traumatised by the war.

"The Government and Belgium are constructing a model boarding primary school, which will accommodate 700 children. It will be completed in September," she said.

Bitamazire said the children would be able to join secondary school afterwards, because the Government and Belgium were refurbishing a secondary school.

"We are also rehabilitating Sir Samuel Baker S.S into a model secondary school to suit the demands of the traumatised children by the time they finish primary school," Bitamazire said.

She said many of the children in northern Uganda had been affected psychologically and otherwise by the war, and needed special handling.

"For that matter," she added, "the teachers will have to be retrained to practise restraint when dealing with the children."

Bitamazire said the children's minds would be renewed through activities like music, games and sports.

"We shall set up whatever is necessary to make sure the children are happy, so that they can be able to adjust steadily and study normally."
