Uganda: Rotary Club Launches Environmental Drive

Kampala — The Rotary club of Kampala has launched an environmental protection campaign in which it intends to replace the use of wood with solar energy.

The club's community service director, James Tugume Rugasira, said the club would mobilise the rural community to participate in the campaign.

"Because of cutting down trees to provide wood for cooking, what was forest cover yesterday in some parts of Uganda is now plain land. Tomorrow it could be a desert," Rugasira said.

He was speaking at the opening of a training of trainers workshop in solar cooking technology at Manhattan Guest House on Balintuma road in Kampala on Monday.

Rugasira asked the government to explore other technology in addition to planting more trees, so as to conserve the environment.
