Uganda: Makerere University Table Tennis Begins Today

Makerere — The long awaited Makerere Open Table Tennis Championship gets underway this morning at the Makerere University main hall.

The event will last for four days. Events director Mr James Kiyimba told The Monitor yesterday that registration of participating clubs as well as the draws shall be done this morning.

"We delayed to make the draws as well as the day's program because of the delayed arrival of the foreign teams," said Kiyimba.

Teams from Kenya and Tanzania are expected to spice up the event, which is the Uganda Table Tennis Association local calendar opener.

The registration fee for individual players is Shs 20,000 while teams will pay Shs 15,000.

Fotogenix Limited, dealers in function hire services and Kodak products distributors have sunk Shs 2 million into the annual event.

This is the seventh year the company is sponsoring the same event.

National team players Kevin Mafabi, Amin Lukaaya and Henry Wahaha as well as schools' stars Bashir Kamoga and Nicholas Mutambuze are expected to show their prowess.

Emmanuel Mtsetse's Mbale Tigers are favourites to win the tournament.
