Gulu — Twenty nine LRA rebels surrendered to the UPDF while 16 were killed last week in various operations in northern Uganda.

The army Spokesperson in the north, Lt Tabaru Kiconco, said this during a press briefing at his office in Gulu on Monday.

Kiconco said among those who surrendered was a Captain, a Lieutenant and a 2nd Lieutenant plus three corporals. He said the UPDF had recovered 22 sub-machine guns and an assortment of weapons from the rebels.

Kiconco cautioned locals to desist from venturing into the villages without consulting the security committees.

"Those people who were abducted by the rebels in Adjumani had travelled deep in the village without consultation. If they had consulted with the army or security committees in their parishes, the abduction could not have taken place," Kiconco said.

He said of the 12 people who were abducted in Adjumani, seven had been rescued by the UPDF.

"A special force has been sent on the ground in Adjumani to rescue the abductees who are still held by the rebels. So far seven have been rescued," he said.

He said two UPDF soldiers were wounded during operation in the last one week.
