Ethiopia: NEBE Launches New Website to Benefit a Few

Addis Ababa — The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) yesterday launched its website which is supposed to provide information to the public. However most of the information posted on the site will benefit a few as it is mostly in English language.

Kemal Bedri Chairman of NEBE on the occasion said that the new website contains information about the upcoming election on May 15, general operations of the election, about the organization and the legal framework behind.

The website, www.electionsethiopia.org- would be in the interest of transparency and accountability, Kemal said. But he has not said how the over 25 million number of voters was to have access to that information.

It is estimated that the country has a very low number of Internet subscribers. And most of the subscribers are concentrated in Addis, only a few subscribers are said to be outside Addis.

It's not known how the people who do not have access to the Internet are going to get the information on the website.

"In a country where there are more than 80 languages spoken it is not fair to post the information in English," one observer who attended the press conference that was held by NEBE to launch the website had said.

It's doubtful whether the website is really for the public, he added. One can only find minor information on the website in Amharic. The website was developed with the support of Electoral Reform International Services (ERIS) which is coordinating donor funding for the current election process in the country.
