Uganda: Cholera Cases On the Rise in Gulu District

Kampala — TWENTY-two new cases of cholera have been reported to St. Mary's hospital, Lacor Pabbo health centre branch in Gulu district.

Two internally displaced persons (IDPs) have so far died since the fresh outbreak of the disease at Jeng-Gari IDP camp in Kilak county.

Gulu LC5 secretary for health Baltaza Latim said, "I heard over radio this morning (Monday) that 22 new cases of cholera have been taken to Lacor Pabbo branch but when I visited the area on Friday there were only two new cases admitted to the health centre."

He said IDPs did not want to use the mobile toilets, claiming that they were unstable and that they preferred to use the bushes.

"I appealed to them to use the toilets to minimise the spread of cholera to other camps," Latim said.

He said a cholera task force headed by Dr. Yote of Lacor hospital had been formed to handle the outbreak in the camps.

Latim challenged camp dwellers and the general population in the district to maintain proper hygiene in order to fight the disease.
