Freetown — The UN Mission in Sierra Leone is mediating in the impasse that has threatened to bring to end the largest opposition party.
Two main factions of the All Peoples Congress are presently in court over several litigations against each other.
One faction is led by the current leader Ernest Bai Koroma and another by the erstwhile leader lawyer Eddie Turay. Eddie Turay and his faction are contesting the leadership of Ernest which they say is not legitimate because the convention in which he was elected in 2002 was 'manipulated'.
The APC recently attempted to hold a national convention ahead of the elections scheduled for 2007, but Eddie Turay and his faction applied for an injunction in the High Court, which was upheld and the party was ordered not to hold it.
But the UN Mission (UNAMSIL) as it is gradually leaving the once beleaguered coastal West African country, ravaged by an eleven years war, seem to be trying to ensure that a precarious situation is not left behind.
The head of the political division Mr. Hagross has urged both factions to reunite Both factions have not only been invited to the UN Mission at Aberdeen but the mission's officials have also visited their office in pursuit of their trouble shooting.
Eddie Turay says he has hope that the Unamsil would be able to settle the impasse.
