Nairobi — Alfred Khang'ati, who led the Kenyan team to last year's Olympic games, yesterday accused some athletes of travelling to Athens for financial gain.
He classified athletes who represented Kenya in Athens into two groups.
He said there were runners who were out to win and others who had no self-belief.
He named the athletes he accuses of going to the games for financial gain, including former London marathon champion, Margaret Okayo, three-time world cross-country 4km champion, Edith Masai, 400m runner Faith Macharia, Sally Barsosio, Alice Timbilil, Abraham Chebii and Joseph Mutua.
He said the likes of Olympic 3,000m SC champion Ezekiel Kemboi, 5,000m silver medallist, Isabella Ochichi, 1,500m silver medallist Bernard Lagat, world record holder, Paul Tergat and Wilfred Bungei were out for victory.
He said the first group were malingerers who justified their under-performance with injuries and other excuses.
He said some of them ran two weeks later in lucrative meets and posted impressive times.
Khang'ati said they had no fighting spirit at the Games and had given up before the start of their respective races.
Khang'ati presented the Olympic Games report to the Government yesterday without including a report from the boxing association.
It was received by the Minister for Sports Ochilo Ayacko at the Nyayo Stadium.
Khang'ati said efforts to include boxing into the final report did not succeed.
Khang'ati said it was difficult to get hold of the officials as "they have reverted to hide and seek game."
However, the minister ordered the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) to ensure the boxing federation hands its report.
Khang'ati said it was unfortunate that a lot was invested in boxing only to achieve nothing.
He said NOCK spent Sh878,185 to ensure the team went through the qualifier in Morocco and an extra Sh754,800 in their build-up tour of Cuba.
Boxing was not represented in the games after Suleiman Bilali was dropped due to injury and David Munyasia was locked out after testing positive for a banned substance.
