Uganda: KCC to Sensitise Women On Urban Farming

Kampala — Kampala City Council has budgeted for Shs7 million to sensitise women and the youth on urban farming.

The Secretary for Social Improvement, Ms Winnie Makumbi, said KCC would encourage fish farming and sensitise communities near landing sites on proper fishing and marketing.

"We want to create jobs, fight food insecurity but at the same time protecting the environment. Council is targeting the youth and women first," Makumbi said.

Makumbi's remarks come after KCC passed the Kampala Urban Agriculture Ordinance that allows residents to plant crops and rear animals in their homes.

She said urban agriculture would improve nutrition among children, increase household income, fight food insecurity and encouraging planting of trees.

She said there is a big market potential for fish, fruits and vegetables in all city markets hence encouraging the youth to involve in it.
