Nairobi — Hundreds of villagers in Trans Mara District have fled their homes fearing attack by wild animals.

The animals, including more than 600 elephants, fleeing the flooded Maasai Mara Game Reserve, wrecked havoc in several farms and homes.

A pride of 10 leopards killed at least 200 goats in Olorien, Kerengani, Kondamet and Olomismis area.

Former KWS director Simon Ole Makala, and former Trans Mara County Council chairman Daniel Mtendei are among scores of people who have lost livestock to the marauding leopards.

Makala's 10 exotic goats were eaten by leopards.

"I bought them from the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (Kari) at Sh100,000, said a bitter Makala.

A herd of elephants raided his neighbour's farm and trampled on all the crops.

Pupils have deserted school after elephants invaded their classrooms.

And at Olesentu Primary School the pupils got a rude shock when monkeys caned some of their colleagues.

Local leaders accused KWS director of neglecting the region.

The leaders, led by Daniel ole Kerenke, said Trans Mara KWS station was ill- equipped to handle the wildlife menace. Kerenke said the Government should bring road worthy vehicles to the district to facilitate movement.

A warden, Collins Omondi, urged the residents to be careful.

He assured the residents everything was being done to restore the situation.
