Nigeria: Discrimination Against Ilaro Students

2 June 2005

Lagos — The poor ratings as well as the rejections which members of the public, higher institutions in the country and employers accord graduates of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro (FPI), Ogun State, have become a source of concern to the stakeholders.

It is common these days, for instance, for other polytechnics or universities to refuse offer of admission from students who apply for HND or direct entry into universities.

The reason usually cited is that FPI is known for cultism and that its products would likely "infect" good students if they were offered admission.

Yet, the truth is that the institution's problems are mainly because of the incessant closures the school had experienced in the recent times, which could be attributed to the lapses on the part of the institution's management.

Although the problem of cultism is also there. We cannot deny that.

It is so disheartening that most tertiary institutions in the South West have blacklisted the school, making it practically impossible for FPI students to be considered for admission at HND level and Direct Entry.

But I suppose people should be dealt with on the basis of their individuality and merit, instead of lumping every FPI products together as potential troubleshooters.

The most unfortunate aspect of the entire saga is that, since most of the cultists are children of the affluent, they readily get juicy employment immediately after graduation, while the offspring of the poor are made to carry the can of their misdeeds.

At the end of the day, nothing positive is achieved, since these favoured miscreants now have the opportunity to continue their evil activities, which they translate to treasury-looting and political assassination of real or imagined opponents.

I appeal to the nation to find a way round the unusual problems confronting the nation's education sector, instead of depriving struggling students the opportunity to earn a decent future.

Ademowo Adewale,

Ilaro, Ogun State.
