Zimbabwe: Chunga Salutes Warriors

Harare — WARRIORS assistant coach Moses Chunga has saluted his players for their commitment to duty after just about everyone reported for camp on Wednesday as they resumed their preparations for the World Cup qualifiers.

Chunga said all the players, except captain Peter Ndlovu, managed to beat the deadline - by which they were supposed to report for camp - and were at the first training session yesterday morning.

The players had been released after the 1-0 victory over Gabon in a 2006 World Cup/Nations Cup qualifier on Sunday and were asked to check in at their hotel by Wednesday night to prepare for the next assignment in Algeria.

"I am glad to say that the turnout was very good. All the players managed to come back on time and this has been great and there weren't any of those silly excuses by one or two players.

"Only Peter (Ndlovu) who is in South Africa is not around," said Chunga.

Chunga confirmed that they cleared Warriors captain Ndlovu to play in the Lucas Radebe testimonial match in South Africa tomorrow.

"Peter has been excused but we expect him back in camp soon after the match, that is by Sunday," said Chunga.

The Warriors technical department showed that they would not tolerate indiscipline when they axed Ronald Sibanda after he gave a flimsy excuse for not reporting for camp ahead of the Cosafa Cup matches in Namibia in April.

Sibanda, who was supposed to captain the locally-assembled Warriors outfit, managed to join the Warriors on Wednesday after serving a one-match suspension against Gabon.

Meanwhile, the technical department are set to draw up the final weekend programme for the squad today as they will release the locally-based players while the foreign contingent remains in camp.

With the Buddie Premier League in full swing this weekend, coach Charles Mhlauri said he did not want to disrupt the matches and did not recall the bulk of the locally-based players, who were in the squad before the game against Gabon.

Mhlauri also pointed out that he did not want to put clubs at a disadvantage by holding on to the six locally-based players retained for the tie coming in nine days time against the Desert Foxes.

Chunga yesterday said all the locally-based players would be leaving for their clubs today but would re-join camp soon after their Premiership ties.

In the squad currently in camp Tapuwa Kapini (Highlanders), Cephas Chimedza, Brian Badza (both CAPS United), James Matola (Buymore), Ronald Sibanda and Sageby Sandaka (both Amazulu) are the only Buddie Premiership players set to get leave.

Quincy Antipas is the seventh locally-based player in camp but the promising star is likely to remain in camp since he is not playing club football at CAPS because of the seemingly endless dispute with Motor Action.

"All the locally-based players are going to be released for the league matches and these are just a few players. But the professionals who make the bulk of the squad will remain in camp.

"Everything in terms of schedules will be put in place after the training session tomorrow but we would want the players to return soon after their games," said Chunga.

He said it would be business as usually for the professionals.

Even Chunga and Mhlauri have commitments tomorrow afternoon at their clubs but the former Zimbabwe captain still remains optimistic that a suitable plan will be drawn out.

Mhlauri is likely to lead CAPS United when his side play Eiffel Wildcats at Rimuka tomorrow while Chunga's Gunners are meeting African Leopards at Gwanzura in a Northern Region Division One League encounter.

"A programme will be devised which will suit everyone. We are going to manage the situation and there is no need to sound as if something would be amiss if the coaches and some players are not present.

"These professionals have match fitness since they have just completed their leagues and here the locally-based players are gaining fitness at their teams," said Chunga.

He hinted that one option would be to train in the morning tomorrow with the professionals before the coaches leave for their club assignments later in the day. Chimedza and Badza, whose team is playing tomorrow, might rejoin camp in the evening and train with the others on Sunday.

Another option for the Warriors could be to leave Emmanuel Nyahuma taking charge for the morning session tomorrow if Chunga and Mhlauri are to go for their clubs.

Chunga said they have roped in the former Black Aces shot-stopper to train the goalkeepers.

"We asked Nyahuma to help us with goalkeeping training since the two of us mostly concentrate on the inside play.

"But as you noticed he has only been helping at training only and is not sitting on the bench," said Chunga.
