Akure — Cocoa farmers in the country have been urged to use better chemical and change attitude towards the production of cocoa to make it a foreign exchange earner as it was in the old Western region.
The advice was given by the Managing Director of INSIS Crop, Mr. Sam Kunu, in Akure during the presentation of FUNGURAN - OH Copper Hydroxide.
He said with the introduction of many chemicals against the black pod disease, farmers are assured of high yields which would improve their financial base.
Kunu, whose company is the marketer of the chemical, advised farmers to desist using copper sulphate, saying it is only in Nigeria that the product is being used.
He advocated the use of FUNGURAN-OH, which he said, is better than any others as it is capable of increasing the number of pods.
According to him, it has intrinsic chemical properties used in cocoa against black pod disease with better solubility in water and crystalline nature which gives even coverage of the cocoa products.
"The formulation manufactured by SPEISS-URANIA, a German company, is highly rain fastness because the fungicide act by protecting the crop when it rains," adding that the product is cheaper and affordable.
Earlier in his speech, Dr. Sunday Agbeniyi, a pathology at CRIN explained that the product does not need addition of lime before spraying.
