Windhoek — PRESIDENT Hifikepunye Pohamba yesterday officially opened the offices of Diamdel Namibia in the Namdeb Centre in the capital.

The event was hosted by the chairman of De Beers, Nicky Oppenheimer, and attended by a number of dignitaries, among them Minister of Mines and Energy, Erkki Nghimtina and the group managing director Gary Ralfe.

In a press statement the company announced that a Namibian, Paulus Shituna, with 14 years experience in the diamond business in De Beers, had been appointed area manager of Diamdel.

"These remain early days for our Namibian operation.

We are however, hugely encouraged and enthused by the task at hand. We in Diamdel Namibia look forward to further drawing upon the considerable intellectual capital within the global Diamdel group towards assisting our locally based clients in developing their businesses in the future," said Shituna, who has recently returned to the country from Belgium to manage the company.

Gary Ralfe affirmed the group's overall intention to develop and enhance the unique partnership between Namibia and Namdeb, in what he described as "a celebrated relationship, currently in its 11th year".

According to the statement, Frank Auger, managing director of Diamdel NV, welcomed the opening of the Namibian office as "a significant step towards De Beers further supporting the entrepreneurial spirit of the local industry".
