Nigeria: Courts Resume After 20-Day Strike

Lagos — Activities resume today at High Courts and Magistrate Courts all over Nigeria, following suspension of a twenty-day nationwide strike by members of Judiciary Staff Association of Nigeria (JUSAN).

The association had gone on an indefinite strike on Wednesday, June 22, following a National Executive Committee decision taken on May 28 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Report of the suspension was in the communiqué issued in Abuja at the weekend, which revealed that top officials of JUSAN, led by Messrs. Usamatu Amin and Basil Mbanefo (National President and Secretary respectively), had signed an agreement with top Judiciary officers, led by Mr. Danlami Senchi, Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court.

Sources among JUSAN (Lagos Branch) officials informed THIS DAY that, following meetings with the Federal Ministry of Labour officials, un-resolved issues which led to the strike would be tabled before delegates at the ongoing reforms conference, for deliberation and resolution.

Meanwhile, the suspension notice had drawn reactions amongst the workers. While some expressed relief at the information, others felt the whole focus of the exercise had been lost with nothing achieved.

According to some JUSAN members in Lagos (names undisclosed), the strike should have been called off, only if the Union had gotten concrete responses to the issues arising. To them, taking the matter before a confab largely-occupied with resource control and other weightier matters.

Among the issues which led to the strike are alleged continued indifference of the National Judicial Council (JNC), National Judicial Institute (NJI) and other stakeholders to the plight of non-judicial officers, particularly non-lawyer personnel of Judiciary nationwide, and staff members welfare. Those earlier copied on the issues include Senate President; Speaker, House of Representatives; Chief Justice of Nigeria; all State Governors; Attorney-General of the Federation; all Chief Judges; all State Attorneys-General; Administrator, National Judicial Institute; Secretary, National Judicial Council; all Secretaries of State Judicial Service Commissions; all Chief Registrars; Chairman, National Confab Judiciary Committee; Chairmen, Judiciary Committees of the National Assembly; and their State counterparts.
