Liberia Legislature to Benefit From EC - Says EU Executive

AllAfrica aggregates reports from Africa's news media. This is an article from the Liberian press. It is not a report by AllAfrica.

If all goes well in the forthcoming presidential and legislative elections, comes October 11, then the new Liberian Legislature stands to benefit from the European Commission through the Konran Foundation (KAF).

The Program coordinator of KAF, Mr. Heint Jockens, said a workshop to train members of that august body is intended to enhance their legislative functions will be conducted in Monrovia.

According to him the lawmakers will have the opportunity to travel to Europe where they will interact with some of their colleagues to discuss plans relative to the improvement of their functions.

Mr. Jockens further said there are other undisclosed plans awaiting the result of the October elections to support that august body so that the Liberian people will depend on them for the survival country after the 14 years of civil conflict.

The KAF Coordinator made the disclosure recently in Monrovia during which time he donated stationeries and office equipment to the National Transitional Legislative Assembly (NTLA) and four local NGOs.

He said the donation was intended to buttress the support for the national Legislature.

The stationeries and office equipment were said to worth over US$12,000.

Giving the Commission's reason of such initiative, Mr. Jockers pointed out that the condition in which the lawmakers find themselves has not been good for the members of the NTLA to function under.

He said that the Commission's gesture would be extended to other government ministries and agencies in a shortest possible time.

He said some of the nearly 600 NGOs in the country are currently benefiting from the Commission's support.
